About Us

Welcome to december magazine, where the past meets the future in a vibrant tapestry of literary and artistic expression. Founded in 1958 amidst the little magazine and small press movements, december has a storied legacy of nurturing emerging voices and celebrating innovative work from seasoned creators.

Our Legacy

From its inception at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop to its transformative years in Chicago under Curt Johnson, december magazine has been a platform for groundbreaking literature and art. Over the decades, we have had the privilege of publishing early works by literary giants such as Rita Mae Brown, Raymond Carver, Stephen Dunn, Donald Hall, Michael Harper, Donald Justice, Ted Kooser, Philip Levine, Joyce Carol Oates, Marge Piercy, William Stafford, C.K. Williams, Charles Wright, James Wright and so many others. Our mission has always been to discover and amplify unheralded talent, a tradition we proudly continue today.

A New Era

Revived in 2012 by Gianna Jacobson, december has embraced the digital age while maintaining our commitment to print. As we move into the modern era, we are dedicated to publishing cutting-edge and diverse voices that reflect the richness of contemporary life. Our recent contributors include Bob Hicok, Albert Goldbarth, and Kelle Groom, Kiley Reid, and many others, showcasing the breadth and depth of the literary talent we support.

Our Commitment

december magazine is more than a publication; it is a community. We strive to amplify the voices of all writers and artists, including those from marginalized communities. We believe that literature and art should reflect the diversity of human experience, and we are committed to providing a platform where all stories can be heard.

Join Us

As we continue to evolve, we invite you to join us on this journey. Explore our latest issues, submit your work, and become part of a community that values creativity, diversity, and excellence. Together, we can shape the future of literature and art.
